Las PosadasDecember 22, 2009Las Posadas is an Advent “novena” celebration, nine days of prayer preceding Christmas. It means, “the inns” and reenacts the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem and search for lodging. Together with our friends at St. Paul’s Episcopal, Suffolk Christian, and Suffolk Presbyterian churches, we adopted this Mexican tradition and made it our own. On December 22, 2009 we met at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where “Mary and Joseph” led us on a procession by candlelight to reenact their pilgrimage to Bethlehem. Youth from all four churches played innkeepers who had no room for the weary travelers. Readings, prayer and hymns accompanied the procession, reminding us of the miracle of Christ’s birth. The evening culminated in a Mexican potluck feast as we were welcomed into Parish Hall for dinner and music. After dinner, the children enjoyed a traditional Mexican piñata. During the hectic time of preparation for Christmas, Las Posadas provided a moment of quiet reflection and worship with our extended church community. Click on photos to enlarge. |
